The Information and Communication Technologies Authority compared mobile usage and advertising revenues for the first quarter of 2012 and 2013, revealing interesting results.

With the increasing use of smartphones, there is a natural rise in users' mobile internet access. Compared to the first quarter of 2012, the number of 3G users increased by around 10 percent in the same period this year. It is estimated that there are 2.7 million iPhones, 5 million Android smartphones, and 750 thousand tablets in Turkey. The growing use of smart devices, along with the diversity of these devices and their decreasing prices, is a key reason for the increase in the number of 3G subscribers.

As the devices sold in the sector primarily consist of smartphones, mobile internet usage is expected to increase even more. Having a mobile-friendly website is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Instead of developing a native iPhone and/or Android application, making your website compatible with mobile devices and tablets ensures a user-friendly experience for your visitors.

With the widespread use of smartphones, communication applications such as WhatsApp, Viber, and Skype have also become extensively used. For instance, with Viber, users can make voice calls and exchange messages, eliminating the need for SMS when internet access is available. This has led to a gradual decrease in SMS and MMS usage. In the same period last year, SMS usage decreased by 3.38 percent, while MMS usage decreased by 12.59 percent. Despite intensive advertisements by telecom operators, the decline in SMS usage is expected to continue increasing in the future.

According to a survey conducted by ICTA, mobile internet usage increased by 75% to 24,233 TByte compared to 13,822 TByte in the first quarter of 2012. The number of mobile internet users increased by 38% to 12,358,175 people, signifying a significant increase.

As a country, our rapid adaptation to new technologies and innovations is remarkable, and it's anticipated that mobile internet users will surpass desktop internet users in the near future.
